- Means complying with the request or an order of an authority figure
- Someone with more power or control can be control can be considered an authority figure. (e.g government)
- Matching the behaviour and beliefs of others in order to fit in or because we don't know how to behave in a certain situation.
- Going along with the majority even though we privately don't agree
- Going along with the majority because we don't know how to behave in a certain situation/ we adopt the beliefs of the group
- Temporarily adopting the behaviours of a role model or group
- Example: All your friends like listening to a certain band that you don't like, but you listen with the anyways
- Example: People evacuating a burning building and you follow them because you don't know how to behave during a fire
- Example: You wear the police officer uniform and act all responsible, but you get back home, you just relax and do whatever you want

- Compliance because we need to fit in a group (compliance falls under this category)
- Conformity because we don't know how to behave under a certain situation, so others provide the information and we adapt (internalisation falls under this category)
- Loss of personal self-awareness and responsibility as a result of being the group
