OUTLINE THE IMPORTANCE OF THE FOLLOWING FOR THE LAND RIGHTS MOVEMENT
  1. MABO DECISION
    1. Overturned the notion of ‘Terra Nullius’, deeming it legally invalid
      1. This held imense significance because the judgements of the high court implemented the legal doctrine in to australian law that recognized that traditional rights and land ownership of the torres straight islander people
        1. 1992
        2. NATIVE TITLE
          1. The Mabo decision influenced the federal government to make a statute which would create a process governing future claims of Native Title. that is, it created a framework for both the protection and recognition of native title.
            1. 1993
              1. The recognition that Aboriginal people who occupy land on which their families have lived continuously for hundreds of years are the owners of that land
                1. Important step for Aboriginal self‐determination
                2. WIK DECISION
                  1. 1996
                    1. The wik people claimed native title over their sacred and traditional land in Queensland
                      1. The movement determined that native tittle could co-exist with currently esatblished pastoral leasing for cattle grazing.
                        1. The decision was significant becasue it recognized the Wik people right to access their traditional lands
                        2. INTRO: Land rights are of critical importance in relation to Aboriginal Spirituality because the Dreaming is inextricably connected with the land
                          1. CONCLUSION: Therefore, the various land rights movements, the Mabo and Wik Decision and Native Tittle Act, withheld immense significance through its overarching impact. In each case the traditional custodians of the land where re connected and symolically regranted land, in which their traidition culture and spirituality emmanates
                            1. The land rights movements was a way of attempting to repiar the damadges done thorugh dispossesion, as evident in the Stolen generations, Separation form the land, and separation from Kinship groups
