Earth and Space Sciences Mind Map
- Earth's Structure
- Made of 4 layers
- The Crust
- The outer most layer of the
Earth, between 10-80 km thick
- The Mantle
- The Upper Mantle
- A thick layer of rock that supports the Earth's weight
- The rock deeper down is softer
and closer to melting. If it does
melt, it can rise to the surface and
create volcanoes
- Most of Earth's rocks
are found here
- The Lower Mantle
- Around 2900 km thick
- Made of very hot rock that has
melted (Magma) and has the
consistency of thick toffee
- The Inner Core
- Is at the centre of the Earth and is
completely solid due to the pressure
being placed on it
- Is mainly made
of Iron and
Nickel
- Is around the size of the moon
- The Outer Core
- Completely liquid and
almost as thick as the
Mantle
- A mixture of different Metals:
mostly Iron and Nickel, which are magnetic
- The Earth's crust
- Two types of crust
- Continental
- 10-70 km thick
- This crust is buoyant and less
dense than Oceanic crust
- Oceanic
- Around 7 km thick
- Is more dense than Continental
crust and is 'younger'
