Poverty
  1. "If they would rather die," said Scrooge, "then they had better do it, and decrease the surplus population"
    1. This is Scrooge telling the two charity workers that if those living in poverty would rather die than go to the available workhouses, then they should and in turn decrease the surplus population, as the poor didn't deserve to live as much as the rich, suggesting that this would then solve overpopulation in London.
      1. This was Dickens introducing Thomas Malthus's ideas, which he later shows to be incorrect and the poor deserve to live just as much, if not more than, the rich.
      2. 'a twice-turned gown'
        1. This shows us how the Cratchit family live as a result of their financial status, this further shows how unlike the rich, the poor had little clothing, nevermind any expensive, posh gowns. It also shows us how poverty can change a person's life and how the poor contrast to the rich.
        2. '"Let me hear another word from you" said Scrooge, "and you'll keep your Christmas by losing your situation."
          1. The rich believed they were above the poor and held their jobs as bribery for them to act and behave with more respect. The poor then had to do as the rich said for fear of not earning enough money to feed their families.
          2. "The ways were foul and narrow; the shops and houses wretched; the people half-naked, drunken, slipshod, ugly. Alleys and archways, like so many cesspools, disgorged their offences of smell, and dirt, and life, upon the straggling streets; and the whole quarter reeked with crime, with filth, and misery."
            1. This portrays poverty by using adjectives such as 'wretched' and 'foul' showing how it is a negative aspect of society and shouldn't be ignored because it results in 'crime' which further leads to sadness and 'misery'.
            2. 'nobody said or thought it was at all a small pudding for a large family'
              1. Despite the fact that the Cratchits lived in poverty, they always showed appreciation for the small things that they had and learnt to appreciate family more than the rich. This shows that altough poverty was awful, it often brought out the best in a person.
