- Carboxylic Acid + Alcohol <--> Ester + Water
- CH3COOH + CH3OH <-->CH3COOCH3 +H2O
- Acid Anhydride + Alcohol -> Ester + Carboxylic Acid
- (CH3CO)2O +CH3OH -> CH3COOCH3 + H2O
- Advantage: Reaction is not reversible
- Disadvantages: Acid anhydride is more expensive and
more dangerous than carboxylic acid
- Acyl Chloride + Alcohol -> Ester + Hydrogen Chlordie
- (Hydrogen chloride acidic fumes)
- Acyl Chloride + Phenol -> Ester + HCl
- e.g. Ethanoyl Chloride + Phenol -> Phenyl Ethanoate + Hydrogen Chloride
- Acid Anhydride + Phenol -> Ester + Carboxylic Acid
- e.g. Butanoic Anhydride + Phenol -> Phenyl Ethanoate + Ethanoic Acid
