  1. Carboxylic Acid + Alcohol <--> Ester + Water
    1. CH3COOH + CH3OH <-->CH3COOCH3 +H2O
    2. Acid Anhydride + Alcohol -> Ester + Carboxylic Acid
      1. (CH3CO)2O +CH3OH -> CH3COOCH3 + H2O
        1. Advantage: Reaction is not reversible
          1. Disadvantages: Acid anhydride is more expensive and more dangerous than carboxylic acid
          2. Acyl Chloride + Alcohol -> Ester + Hydrogen Chlordie
            1. (Hydrogen chloride acidic fumes)
            2. Acyl Chloride + Phenol -> Ester + HCl
              1. e.g. Ethanoyl Chloride + Phenol -> Phenyl Ethanoate + Hydrogen Chloride
              2. Acid Anhydride + Phenol -> Ester + Carboxylic Acid
                1. e.g. Butanoic Anhydride + Phenol -> Phenyl Ethanoate + Ethanoic Acid
