Compounds
- A compound is a substance that contains an atom of at last 2
different elements that are chemically combined
- For example, magnesium oxide is made from
magnesium atoms and oxygen atoms
- Ionic Compounds
- An ion is an electrically charged particle
that is formed when atoms lose or gain
electrons.
- An ionic compound is when a negative
ion (atom that gains an electron) joins
a positive ion (at that lost an electron.)
- Acid
- An acid is a molecule that can
be lost or gained by a pair of
electrons.
- For example, citric acid or
hydrochloric acids are acids.
(Its kind of in the name!)
- Bases
- A base is a substance that can
react with an acid which can then
make a salt and water.
- They are normally metal oxides or metal hydroxides.
- For example, copper oxide or sodium hydroxide are bases.
- A base
NEUTRALISES and
acid.
- Carbonates
- Carbonates release carbon
dioxide when they are heated.
- A carbonate always ends in carbonate
- Like calcium carbonate
- Salt
- A salt is a compound formed when an
acid neutralises a base
- A common salt is sodium chloride because
it is the salt you put on chips.
