  1. Mark Tomlinson
    1. Phases in development & attachment
      1. Attachment system - the inborn, genetically pre-programed propincity of infants to display attachment behavior
        1. Orientation & signaling - the 1st phase in development of attachment system where infant behaves in a friendly fashion without the ability to discriminate one person from another
          1. Discriminating sociability - the 2nd phase in the development of attachment system, where the infant becomes more discriminating towards primary caregiver
            1. Attachment - the 3rd phase in development of attachment system, where the infant actively seeks proximity to primary caregiver & uses this person as a secure base from which to explore the world
              1. Reciprocal relationship - Final stage of development of attachment system, where the infant begins to understand other people's motives & feelings
              2. Security of attachment
                1. Strange situation - an experimental procedure used by Ainsworth & her colleges in order to test and measure Bowlby's attachment ideas
                  1. Secure attachment - the attachment behavior where infants are upset by the departure of their primary caregivers , but upon reunion are soothed & fairly quickly resume exploratory play
                    1. Insecure- avoidant attachment - the attachment behavior where infants appear unperturbed by the departure of their primary caregiver, & seem independant & self-sufficient
                      1. Disorganized attachment - a 4th category of attachment behavior that describes infants who show a marked & pervasive fear in the presence of the primary caregiver
