  1. Chromatography
    1. Separating technique that separates substances based on solubility in a particular substance
      1. Identifies additives/pesticides in food,dugs & alcohol,water samples for pollution,crime investigation,inks...
      2. Paper Chromatography
        1. Separates according to size of particle
          1. Solvent rises through paper
            1. Dissolves sample picture
              1. Small particles(more soluble) will travel further than large particles
          2. Retention Factor(RF Factor)
            1. Used to compare the components of various other samples
              1. Rf=distance from the base line to the spot÷distance from base line to solvent front
        2. Identification of gases
          1. Hydrogen
            1. A lighted splint should make a "pop" noise
            2. Oxygen
              1. A glowing splint will relight
              2. Carbon Dioxide
                1. Limewater gets cloudy if gas is present
                2. Chlorine
                  1. Makes damp blue litmus paper turn red(indicates chlorine is acidic),then white
                3. The Flame Test
                  1. Place small amount of compound in a nichrome loop which has been cleaned with HCL & heated
                    1. Dip once again n HCL before taking the metal ion

                          1. Copper(II)-blue
                            1. Iron(II)-green(turns orange brown when left)
                              1. Iron(III)-orange-brown
