Crude Oils
and fuels
- Most compounds
are hydrocarbons
- Only contain hydrogen
and carbon
- Covalent bonds
- Most hydrocarbons in
crude oil are alkanes
- Alkane general formula:
CnH2n + 2
- Number of hydrogen atoms is
double the no. of carbon + 2
- Alkanes are saturated
hydrocarbons=carbon atoms are
joined by single bond
- Fractional distillation
- Hot at bottom and cool at top
- Higher boiling points condense at bottom
- Lower boiling points condense at top
- Burning Petrol
- Creates carbon monoxide
- TOXIC!!
- Non-renewable
- Causes global dimming
- Particulates (particles of carbon)
reflect light back to space
- Petrol includes: sulphur + oxygen = sulphur dioxide
- This causes acid rain
- Burning hydrogen
- No pollutants
- No extra CO2 added to air
- Only releases water!
- Biodiesel
- Made from plants and animal oils
- Carbon neutral
- Same amount of carbon dioxide released in
combustion as is absorbed in photoynthesis
- Products = food for cattle and soap
- Destroys animal habitats
- Uses land that could have been used for food production
- Nuclear power
- Uses a fuel called uranium
- Uranium put in rods that are placed in water
- Nuclear reactions takes place when removed from water
- Heats water to produce steam that turns turbine
- Of coal, oil and gas, coal
produces the most CO2
- Renewable energy
- Hydroelectricity
- Pumped storage
- Not a way of generating electricity
- a way of STORING it!!
- Wind energy
- Solar energy
