Post-Modernism
- Key Ideas:
- Don't generalize families as see them as having different structures
- Recognize increased society tolerance to intimate relationships and domestic agreements
- Believe nuclear family is fragmented/ AGAINST functionalism
- Key theorists:
- Stacey- diversity will never be dominate in western culture
- Haravan (1978)- life course analysis states sociologists should be concerned with individual family members
- And choices made within these family arrangements e.g being a sole earner
- Focuses on flexibility+ variation
- Criticisms:
- Giddens- increased choice can be constraining + liberating
- And pure relationships (to meet others needs) is unstable
- Fletcher (functionalist)- agrees with above + that people now expect to much
- Advantages:
- Recognizes cultural + social change
- Understands that every family is different
- looks INSIDE the family
- Disadvantages:
- Possibly exaggerates changes in society
- Already a well-known idea (unoriginal)
- Only looks at positives (bias)
