exercised great influence in Europe

alliance opposed to the
revolutionary movement

support to Britain and France

in 1867, although this was limited
- After 1871 it was growing in Nationalism
- Problems of co-ordinating the policies and resources
of the two states as well as the issue of how to bind
the two states together

- There was much social conflict and many problems such as riots
between groups such as the dominant Hungarian nation the Magyrs
and the Croats/Slovaks
- This was despite the well meaning
efforts of the Emperor, Franz Joseph
- Concessions to one group
only offended and upset
another, making the
problems impossible to
ammend
- Military
- Due to its economic weakness, it was unable to have the
military power to play a fully independent role in international
affairs
- Economic
- By 1871, Austria Hungary had
weakened economically
- Economic progress and growth
was dwarfed by that of other
countries
