The Treaty of Versailles
  1. Signed on the 28th June 1919
    1. Land
      1. Alsace-Lorraine was returned to France
        1. Lost overseas colonies
          1. Land was demilitarised
          2. Army
            1. Germany was not allowed military aircraft or submarines
              1. The navy was reduced to 6 battleships and 15,000 sailors
                1. The army was reduced to 100,000 men
                  1. The Rhineland area was demilitarised and occupied by allied troops
                  2. Money
                    1. £6.6 billion had to be paid in annual instalments
                    2. Blame
                      1. Article 231 said that Germany was to blame for the war
                        1. This was the term that Germany most resented
                          1. They believe that Germany went into the war as self defence
                          2. Reactions to the treaty
                            1. Germans were shocked by the strictness of the treaty which caused protests in Berlin
                              1. the treaty was labelled 'diktat' meaning dictated peace
                                1. Germany lost 13% of its land
                                  1. The military terms were destroying the country's reputation as a great power and left it vulnerable to attack
                                    1. The 'Land' terms robbed Germany of their industrial areas eg Alsace- Lorraine
                                      1. Germany lost 10% of its industry and 15% of its agriculture
