Network security 2
  1. Physical security
    1. First line of defence - preventing unauthorised people from entering buildings where network equipment is locked up
      1. Keep access doors locked using keypads, fingerprint pads etc
        1. Biometric security recognition can be used on mobile devices to authenticate users
          1. Use swipe cards containing user's details to enter the building
            1. Install closed circuit television to monitor interior and exterior of building
              1. Install burglar alarms in all rooms
                1. Fit radio frequency identification (RFID) chips to all equipment so an alarm will sound if the equipment is taken out of the building
                  1. Use chains and locks so equipment can't be stolen
                  2. Firewalls
                    1. Firewalls protect a network connected to a WAN such as the internet
                      1. They can be provided by hardware or software
                        1. They can be configured to prevent communications from entering the network
                          1. They can prevent programs and users from accessing the internet from within the network
                              1. Individual computers usually have a software firewall which have default rules installed onto them to protect the computer from common threats
                                1. A business with a LAN and a internet connection is likely to have a hardware based firewall because they have more flexibility in the rules that can be applied and data throughput is faster
