Energy Transfer By Heating
- Infrared Radiation
- All objects emit and absorb infrared radiation
- Hotter objects emit more infrared
- Surface Types
affect the amount of
IR emitted/absorbed
- Shiny/White Objects emit/absorb less.
- Black/Matte absorb/emit more.
- Electromagnetic Radiation
- Waves
- Kinetic Theory
- Solids
- Fixed Shape
- Particles cannot move.
- Cannot be compressed
- No space for particles to move into
- Liquids
- Flow and take shape of container
- Particles can move around each other.
- Cannot be compressed
- Particles are close togethyer and so have no space to move
- Gases
- Flow and Fill
- Particles move quickly in all directions
- Can be compressed
- Space for particles to move into
- Conduction
Anmerkungen:
- Metals are good conductors of heat, but non metals are insulators.
- Diagram
- Conduction in metals
- Free Electrons
Anmerkungen:
- Electrons in a metal can lave the atom and move around freely. The free or delocalised electrons help transfer heat energy from the hotter part of the metal to the cooler part.
- Ions
Anmerkungen:
- The bit of the atom left behind becomes a metal ion. The ions are packed closely together and vibrate continually, transferring the energy.
