Barrister Training Adv & Disadv
- Advantages:
- non degree route for mature students so is an ideal
opportunity for candidates who decide to enter
profession later on in life
- Pupillages give on the job training
- Bar vocational course gives training in advocacy (speaking in court)
- Dining at inns of court has allowed pupils to gain 12 points by attending
training courses which is better for pupils outside of London
- Salaries increase considerably once qualified and vocational stage is
much shorter than solicitors
- Disadvantages
- Course fees are expensive and can deter pupils from poorer backgrounds
- No ILEX route for barristers unlike solicitors
- Pupillages can vary in quality and can be hard to obtain a pupillage as they
are very competitive with limited places available
- the training salary is considerably lower than solicitors (it is around half of what solicitors get paid
- Pupils training through the non-law degree route only have one year of
formal training on the CPE course. Questionable whether their knowledge
of law is sufficient enough for the role of a barrister.
