Chapters 1-3
- Scientific Method
- a series of steps/process where a question is asked,
an experiment is done, and an answer is found. Steps
include: observation, question, hypothesis, prediction,
experiment, results, and conclusion.
- Water
- water molecules
- molecules stay close together due to
hydrogen bonding. many molecules
are linked by multiple hydrogen bonds
(cohesion)
- specific heat
- the amount of heat that must be absorbed or lost
for 1g of that substance to change its temperature
by 1'C. Water has a high specific heat.
- hydrophobic
substances
- substances that are nonionic
and nonpolar, they repel water
(ex: oil and water)
- pH in the body
- there are many pH's in the body:
saliva and urine are 6, human
blood and tears are 7, and inside of
the small intestine is 8
- Lab Safety
- lab coats have to be
worn in order to
prevent clothes from
being stained
- goggles have to be worn to
protect the eyes from
substances and sharp objects
- students should listen to their
teacher for directions in order to
prevent accidents.
- Elements
- Trace elements
- elements that are required by an
organism in only small quantities.
- Atomic Mass
- the sum of the protons and neutrons in the
nucleus of an atom, it is an approximation of
the total mass of an atom
- Essential elements
- elements that an organism needs
to live a healthy life and reproduce
- Nature
- Natural Selection
- a theory created by Charles Darwin that
proposed that individuals with inherited
traits that are better suited to their
environment are more likely to survive and
reproduce than less well- suited individuals
- Classification
- Biologists identify and classify species as they are found.
There are 8 levels of classification: domain, kingdom,
phylum, class, order, family, genus, and species
