- By 1770 Irish nationalism began to demand more power for
themselves and the Dublin Parliament.
- The Nationalists were Catholic and
Presbyterian. They armed themselves in
preparation for a rebellion.
- They called themselves the United Irishmen and
were led by Theobald Wolfe Tone and they wanted
to "break the connection" between Ireland and
Britain and to unite "catholic, protestant and
dissenter".
