Psychoanalysis
- Founding Farther of Psychoanaylsis
- Neurology: Disorders of the nervous system
- Psychotherapy; Treatment given
from a trained professional to a
patient.
- Psychoanalysis: Theroies of the mind
- Dreams
- He had the idea that
dreaming and dreams were
the guardians of sleep.
- when we dream we disconnect ourselves from
the external stimuli.
- External Stimuli: Noise, Temperature, Light, The need to urinate,
Numb are/ leg, Pain. Internal Stimuli: Emotions, Fears, Desires,
Previous days activity
- Manifest content: what the dream is said to be about
by the dreamer- the story the dreamer tells.
- Latent content: The meaning underlying the
dream. If the symbols from the manifest content are
translated ny an analyst, they can reveal
unconscious thoughts
- Unconscious Thoughts
- He thought that part of the mind was
not accessible and is hidden
completely. He called it the
Unconscious mind.
- Freud focused on sexual issues and how they are important for
humans. But discussing sexual issues was not socially
acceptable in his day. When he talked about repressed
unconscious thoughts he was often talking about repressed
sexual wishes and desires.
- We have unconscious thoughts that we know about and unconscious
thoughts we don't know. Our Unconscious thoughts, wishes and
desires guide a lot of our behaviour.
- Mentally ill
- Freud trained as a doctor and was distressed with how little was being done
for mentally ill people. For example shaking patients to shake out demons.
Freud wanted to do better and started to wonder about mental health as
opposed to physical health. He travelled to France to learn hypnotism.
- Hypnotism he rejected as the person couldn't remember the sessions
which he thought was important. Nonetheless he realised that the mind
was powerful and could cause mental health problems.
- Condensation, Displacement,
secondary elaboration
- Condensation: Many ideas appearing as one idea in a
dream. These separate elements are important in
uncovering repressed material so that one idea needs to
be unpicked.(represented as one symbol.)
- Displacement: something unimportant that seems to be important, in
order to shift attention from what is really important
- Secondary Elaboration: using muddled ideas from dreamwork to build up a whole story.
The dreamer will add nits to the dream when telling someone what it is about to try to make
the dream make sense. This gets in the way of understanding the LATENT content of the
dream
- Dreamwork is what the mind is doing whilst dreaming- keeping
unconscious thoughts hidden and repressed.l It is the job of the
mind when dreaming to help protect the individual from undesirable
thoughts, and dreamwork is the term for this 'job'.
