- There exists a wide range of approaches to sound synthesis, within the framework of Granular
Synthesis. Techniques have been used and developed since the early twentieth century, in
techniques that grouped together characterize each implementation forming branches of Granular
Synthesis. Since before even Gabor, Ezra Pound (1910) and Henry Cowell developed the “Great Base”
theory, highlighting the shared mathematics, that describes the continuity between rhythmic
divisions and tonal harmonics in musical form. This then radical idea, together with the theory and
usage of Analog Impulse Generators in early electronic music, forms the background to methods
that utilize the differences in our perception of sound on different timescales, such as Pulsar
Synthesis.
