- Harry Truman was the American President at the time

- At first the USSR was lead by Josef Stalin
- Then Nikita Khrushchev took over when Stalin died in 1953
- Where?
- The two superpowers involved were the USA and the USSR
- these two became bitter rivals after the defeat of Germany in WWII
- On one hand the USA wanted to start slowly giving them a second chance
- But on the other hand the USSR wanted to completely destroy Germany and claim the land for themselves
- What happened?
- When the Russians drove the Germans out of Eastern Europe they imposed pro-Russian Communist Governments
- They did this to ensure they wouldn't be invaded from the West again
- But the Western countries saw this as a move of Soviet aggression
- in 1947 President Truman declared that the USA would help any country trying to contain the spread of communism
- Known as the Truman Doctrine
- After WWII the allied powers split Germany into 4 sections
- The British zone
- The Soviet zone
- The French zone
- The US zone
- Each ruled by the countries they are named after
- The USA, Britain and France were trying to build back up the economy of the parts of Germany they ruled
- Wheras the USSR wanted to completely destroy Germany and make another communist country
- So to ensure there is never a strong Germany again they built a wall through Germany
- The Western allies didn't like this so they decided to help the people on the other side of the wall, This was called the Berlin Airlift
- This was when the USA sent over food and supplies to the people in need on the other side
- Stalin saw that he could not win so he lifted the blockade in May of 1949
