Ethnic differences in educational achievement
- INTRO
- Ethnicity: a person's
cultural background
based on factors such
as religion and
language.
- Educational achievement: how
well a student progresses in school
and how well they do as a result.
- May be seen to be a link between the
two: e.g. a smaller percentage of
Pakistani, black and Bangladeshi
children gain five or more GCSEs than
the white population, but Indian and
Chinese children do better.
- However, people might argue
ethnicity is not the only factor.
- B1: Cultural Factors
- this refers to language
differences in the home that
create a barrier in
communication.
- e.g. a child is less likely to
understand things at school if
they find the language difficult.
- Ball
- parents' language barriers mean that they
are unable to have good communication
with their child's school.
- However this does not seem to affect the higher
education levels of Indian and Chinese children.
