Animal Farm chapter summary
  1. CHAPTER 1
    1. Description of all characters but pigs. Old Major's speech, telling his dream, passing on his wisdom, which forms the basis of Animalism. Introduction of 'Beasts of England', foretelling of a 'golden future time'.
    2. CHAPTER 2
      1. Old Major dies. The animals organise a rebellion. Description of the pigs. Old Major's dream is turned into Animalism, the principles of which most animals do not understand. Moses spreads 'Sugarcandy mountain'. Jones is kicked out. All signs of slavery is destroyed by animals. The animals explore the manor house and decide that no one should live there. Manor Farm is changed to Animal farm. Seven Commandments are established. Milk disappears.
      2. CHAPTER 3
        1. The pigs assume leadership. Disagreements between Napoleon and Snowball are apparent. Commandments are reduced to maxim 'four legs good, two legs bad'. Birth of nine puppies. Pigs stealing apples and milk. Lesser of two evils- If they disagreed, the pigs would fail and Jones would return.
        2. CHAPTER 4
          1. News of rebellion spreads. Mr Pilkington and Mr Frederick are on bad terms. Battle of the Cowshed. Boxer and Snowball are rewarded for bravery
          2. CHAPTER 5
            1. Mollie disappears. Snowball proposes windmill. Snowball's expulsion. Boxer's maxim 'Napoleon is always right'. Squealer tells that the windmill will be built.
            2. CHAPTER 6
              1. Animals work an 60 hour week and Sundays. The pigs move into the farmhouse. Commandments are first amended. Windmill is destroyed, Snowball is blamed
              2. CHAPTER 7
                1. Conditions worsen and animals face starvation. Napoleon sell's hen's eggs, who rebel. Snowball becomes a scapegoat for all that goes wrong. Trial, confessions and execution of animals. Beasts of England is forbidden.
                2. CHAPTER 8
                  1. Sixth commandment justifies killing of animals. The animals are worse off but Squealer uses statistics to convince them otherwise. Wood is sold to Frederick who pays with forged notes. Battle of Windmill. Poem composed by Minimus glorifies Napoleon. Animals give thanks to Napoleon for every good fortune.
                  2. CHAPTER 9
                    1. Boxer looks forward to his retirement. Young pigs are educated separated. Animal farm becomes a republic. Moses talks of 'Sugarcandy Mountain' again. Boxer is falls and is taken away.
                    2. CHAPTER 10
                      1. Animals die but none retire. Few of the young animals understand Animalism. The farm is rich but the animals are not. Napoleon walks on his hind legs and carries a whip. 'Four legs bad, two legs better'. All animals are equal but some are more equal than others.
