Democracy
- Defined by: "a system of government
by the whole population or all the
eligible members of a state, typically
through elected representatives."
- Linked to a system of 'parliamentary
democracy' or better known as
'Westminster Democracy' in the UK.
- Democracy is derived
from the Greek,
'DEMOKRATIA'
- 'DEMOS'
- 'the people'
- 'KRATES'
- 'power'
- There are three main types of democracy
- Direct
- Direct democracy (also known as pure
democracy) is a form of democracy in
which people decide (e.g. vote on, form
consensus on) policy initiatives directly.
- For example: Refurendums - recent one
include that of the 2014 Scottish
Independence Refurendum
- Totalitarian
- Relating to a system of government
that is centralised and dictatorial
and requires complete subservience
to the state.
- For example: allows
people to vote, however
only gives the electorate
one option, e.g. China.
- Indirect
- Representative democracy (also indirect
democracy) is a variety of democracy founded on
the principle of elected officials representing a
group of people, as opposed to direct democracy.
- For example: people can vote for someone to
represent them: Westminster elections, European
Union Elections, Assembly Elections and Local
Elections.
