- Are a combination of a verb and a participle (adverb or
preposition), that creates a meaning different from the original verb.
- Back up = support, blow up = explode,
break down = stop functioning or get
upset, calm down = relax.
- My car broke down so I broke down in
tears (first broke + down = stopped
functioning; second = got upset).
- Transitive
- Can be followed by an object.
- I blew up my car. (Blew + up
= explode, car is the object).
- Intransitive
- Cannot be followed by an object.
- This morning my car blew up.
