Physics
ENERGY
Types of Energy
Chemical energy
Energy is stored in the links between atoms
The energy is released when the links between atoms are broken.
Strain Energy
When a spring is stretched or squashed energy is stored.
When you stop stretching the spring, it releases energy
Kinetic Energy
Movement Energy
An object that moves has kinetic energy
Nuclear Energy
As the nucleus of an atom becomes more stable it releases energy.
Light Energy
Radiation Energy
Forms in waves
Light energy comes from a light source
Gravitational Potential Energy
anything that goes up has to come down
When something hits the ground energy is released
Electrical Energy
Electrical energy is due to the movement of electrons.
Electrons circle atoms
Sound Energy
Sound energy is mainly made from vibrations
Internal Energy
created by the movement of atoms.
Vibrations
LIGHT
Forms
Type of Energy
electromagnetic radiation
Sun, stars and fire release heat
infrared heat
Objects that emit light
= luminous
Light leaves objects in all directions
Objects that don't emit light
non-luminous
but can still reflect light//eg: The Moon
can be classified as
Transparent
Light passes through
Translucent
Some light rays pass and others are scattered
Opaque
No light passes through
Light travels in a straight line
You can see straight light rays travel through small holes
you can see light beams through dusty atmosphere
Smaller lines of light are called rays.
You can do this by shining a light through slit card
Shadows
Light hits an opaque object and is stopped
Rays which pass the edges continue
A region of light without light is a shadow
Reflection
Light which reflects of a shiny surface
eg= mirror
Lines of reflection=
Incident ray
a light ray that strikes a surface
Reflected ray
a light ray that is reflected from a surface
Normal
a line perpendicular (that is 90 degrees) to the surface which the incident ray strikes
Plane Mirror
Mirror with a flat surface
Image
the appearance of an object in a mirror
Angle of reflection
the angle between the reflected ray and the normal
FORCES
Balanced + Unbalanced Forces
No Force
= stationary// continue what he is already doing
Equal Force
Same as no force//cancel each other out
Unbalanced Force
accelerating in the direction of the force
Springs
Robert Hooke
1635-1703
Hooke invented the spring balance
Measures force in Newtons
(N)
elastic limit
discovered by Hooke
Hooke placed a mass on the spring, and when he took it off the spring it remained slightly stretched
Eventually after the elastic limit the spring will Plasticly Deform
Completely deformed
Springs in series/parallel
Springs in Series
Carry half the same mass as if they were independent springs
Springs in Parallel
Carry half the mass each
Graphs
Velocity=
Displacement over Time
Displacement means distance from start to finish
How to find Velocity=
How far away from the start divided by time taken
How fast you would be going if you ran in a straight line from start to finish
Velocity Time Graph
