Relative Clauses
- A relative clause give esssential
information about the noun.
- Without the relative clause the
sentence would be incomplete and
would not make sense.
- Example: She is the woman.....( the sentences is
incomplete, therefore it needs a relative clause)
Example: she is the woman WHO wrote this song.
- Example #2: It is an animal. ( the sentence is
incomplete ) so the correct example would be: It
is an animal THAT lives in the desert.
- We introduce defining relative clauses with
relative pronouns such as: that, which, who,
whose, when and where.
- We use WHO and THAT to refer to people. Example: she is the girl ( WHO / THAT) lends me her english book.
- When the person is the object of the sentences we use WHOM, but only in
very formal language: That´s the woman ( WHOM ) I saw yesterday. ( very
formal ) Example #2: That´s the woman ( WHO / THAT ) I saw ( informal )
- We use WHICH and THAT to refer to things. Examples: This is the magazine (
WHICH / THAT ) I bought last night. Example #2: This is the song ( WHICH/
THAT ) I like the most.
- We use WHEN to refer to time. Examples: 2015 was the year ( WHEN ) I goy my proffesional degree. // On February 12th,
2010 was the date (WHEN ) I became in mother.
- We use (WHERE ) to refer to spaces and places. Examples: Thie is
the town (WHERE) I was born. // The club ( WHERE) they are
performing is very small.
- We use ( WHOSE) to refer to possession. Examples: He is a composer (WHOSE) music is
world-famous. // They are the children ( WHOSE ) mother is the math teacher.
- We use THAT instead of WHO OR WHICH in relative clauses Examples: He is the man THAT (=WHO ) we met at the studio. // Here is the guitar THAT ( =WHICH ) I bought last week.
- IIt is very common in english to use (THAT) after: something, anything, nothing, all and suprlatives. Examples:
Here is something ( THAT) you could see. // Do you have anything ( THAT) yo want to sell? // That was the worst
performance ( THAT ) I ever seen!.
