Victim Surveys - BCS

Most common is the BCS
1. carried out every 2 years and involves interviews with a huge sample
Involve asking people if they have been a victim of crime over a specified time period
Participants are over 16 years old
Asks wether they or member of their family been victim of a crime over last year
Does not include certain crimes e.g. murder and victimless crimes such as drug offences
Sample is too small to give reliable date on less frequent crimes e.g. sexual assault and rape
1. Most types of corporate crimes, enviromental crime and offences regulated by organisations other than the police are not included
People living outside households aren't included e.g. prisoners ans homeless but they are likely to have hiigher rates of victimisation
Respondants may not know about all incidents in the household
Telescoping may take place - believe incidents happened in past 12 months but really happened before
Respondants mat deliberately withhold infomation or forget about the incident
