Life Cycle of the
Elephant
- Curios Fact: It is the only
animal with the best
memory.
- The baby: stage lasts from birth until the
elephant is weaned from its mother´s
milk. This occurs between the ages of 5 and
10.
- Curious Fact: In fact, during birth, a group of female
elephants can wait for the mother who is in labor
to finish her labor to welcome the newborn into
the world. Once born, the elephant is greeted by the
loud belllows and sounds of the females awaiting
his arrival.
- The gestion of elephants lasts around 22 and 24
months, almost two years! The pregnancy is so long,
probably due to the large size of the elephant and the
slow development of the fetus of the this animal.
During the pregnancy of the elephant the calf reaches
100 or 150 kilograms and is 90 centimeters tall, and
although they eat solid food at six months, they willl
continue to drink milk from their mother for three or
four years.
- Adolescence: begins with weaning and ends at
age 17, when the elephant reaches sexual
maturity.
- Adult: begins at
age 18.
- Characteristics: Babies: are totally dependent on their mothers. The
mother feeds, cleans and helps them in migration until they are 3 to 5
years old, when they begin to learn to be independent. Adolescent:
elephants do not participate in mating, but instead find their place in
the herd or are referred to another. Adult: an elephant lives to age
70 in a structured social society.
- Elephants are the largest land animals in existence. There
are three species: African Bush, African Forest and Asian
elephants. The life cycle of the elephant is divided into three
stages: baby, adolescent and adult.
- When an elephant is baby, as it is blind, its
predators make it easier for them to eat
them, so the mothers have to take great care
of their young.
