  1. Can transfer energy and information
    1. (without a net motion through the material)
    2. They involve vibrations (OSCILLATIONS)
      1. LONGTITUDINAL WAVES
        1. OSCILLATIONS are PARALLEL to direction of ENERGY TRANSFER
        2. TRANSVERSE WAVES
          1. The medium OSCILLATES up and down but wave pattern is horizontal
            1. Energy travels horizontally but the water stays where it is
            2. EXAMPLE: A WATER WAVE.
            3. WAVELENGTH
              1. It is the length of one complete wave
                1. FREQUENCY (F) is number of waves in one second
                  1. Measured in HERTZ (Hz)
                    1. 50 Hz = 50 vibrations in 1 second
                  2. Distance between two peaks or troughs measured in LAMBDA
                  3. WAVE SPEED
                    1. The speed at which energy is transfered along the wave
                      1. Measured in meters per second
