The Space Race
- The United States
- The United States always lagged
behind the USSR in the race for
space. Their number of firsts was
always lower and they could
never keep up.
- A huge part of the Space Race was
America's fear of the communist
regime. As it was spreading through
into China, America was becoming
increasingly worried about their
countries hope for the future.
- Economy
- From the moment JFK announced the common goal of landing
an American on the moon, he told the American people that
would have to make sacrifices to achieve this goal. The Already
mass fear of Nuclear war was not a mitigating help when
congress announced they would be increasing taxes to pay for
the new ideas. NASA's current budget would have to have been
500x bigger to afford everything that was being demanded. The
upside to the increased taxes was a huge increase in jobs that
where available for engineers and scientists. This would bring
unemployment right down. Despite the huge tax increases and
amount of congressional money being spent they gave JFK the
money because he had so skilfully captivated the minds of
Americans.
- Leaders
- Wernher Von Braun
- Verner Von Braun was a German
rocket scientist during WW2. He
was deported from Germany at
the end of the war and became
the leading scientist in the
American Space Program.
- John F Kennedy
- Throughout the Space Race, America had 4
Presidents. One of the most influential was
President Kennedy who challenged at
congress the American people to land a man
on the moon within the decade. Although he
didn't see his challenge through his
encouragement pushed America to make the
jump.
- Social
- The Social impact of the Space Race on the U.S.
was vast. JFK managed to convince the American
people that the impossible was possible. He
inspired a nation of scared people to come
together and sacrifice for a common goal. The
world turned its gaze to the stars. They
wondered of the incredible possibilities of
sending man to space. The possibility of meeting
new life.
- Political
- The whole idea of launching rockets and sending a man to
space would have always been expensive. This meant that
congress met on countless occasions. Many petitions where
signed and sent into congress to stop the increase budget
for NASA. This left a difficult decision for the U.S.
government as to whether the American people wanted and
were prepared to spend the money on this goal. JFK and his
associates had to draft many bills to congress and if they
had not passed them the USSR most definitely would have
won the space race.
- The Soviet Union
- Before the many achievements of the Soviet Union,
the government was mainly using the rocket
program as a means to create intercontinental
ballistic missiles for use against the United States. It
wasnt until after many years of convincing were
they allowed to launch a sattelite into space. The
USSR achieved many of their goals in going into
space before the Americans could even get close.
Sergey Korolev's expertise in management
enabled them to achieve space travel before their
time
- The Soviet Union brought home the first win in
the space race. The launched the first satellite
into space: The Sputnik. The launch of this
caused massive political and social problems in
America, the fact that a communist country
could achieve this before democracy was a
massive blow to the political and social pride of
the nation.
- Economy
- The US space effort had more funding than
the Soviet space program. NASA spent about
$23 billion dollars on manned programs from
1961 through the first lunar landing in July
1969 (Mercury: $.4 billion; Gemini: $1.3 billion;
and Apollo: $21.3 billion). Estimates for the
Soviet manned programs range from $4.8
billion to $10.1 billion or less than 50% of
NASA's budget.
- Leaders
- Sergei Korolev
- Sergei Korolev was the leading
mind behind the Soviet Space
Program. Unlike Von Braun his
identity was kept a closely
guarded state secret to ensure
the success of there program.
- Nikita Khrushchev
- Nikita Khrushchev was a soviet politician that lead
the Communist party during part of the Cold War. In
Khrushchev’s eyes because the Soviet Union has
out-produced the United States in weapons and
space technology, the Soviet Union has in essence
defeated the United States. Furthermore, with
capitalism no longer a concern, the Soviet Union is
free to pursue its goal of communism. His main
outlook was that beating the United States in
science was in essence defeating capitalism once
and for all.
- Social
- Much like the U.S. the idea of their opposing ideologies
getting a one up on each other was unbearable. Every time
the U.S. government upped the budget of NASA the
soviets immediately did the same to keep in line. The fear
that was being advertised against capitalism was also a
huge spurring tool for the soviets to gain funding for the
space program. The idea of the capitalist regime failing in
this area seemed to good to be true.
- The Two Big Ideologies
- The USSR
- Communism
- The U.S
- Capitalism
- The Space race was one of
the biggest Communism vs.
Capitalism encounters in
history. It put the weak parts
of both ideologies to the test
and showed the dark side of
both.
