Evaluation: The Model of Breakdown
- Positive
- The model offers some implications for intervening in a
relationship breakdown and ideally 'fixing' it instead. The
model stresses the importance of communication in
relationship breakdown. Pay attention to the things that
people say, the topics that they discuss and the ways
in whicxh they talk about their relationship offer both an
insight into their stage and also suggests appropriate
interventions for that stage.
- THIS IS SUPPORTED BY CINA ET AL'S 2003 STUDY
- When partners' relationship skills are
enhanced their relationships are of better
quality. Cina et al 2003, compared 50
couples who received Couples Coping
Enhancement Training, CCET, with a
control group. The CCET group reported
much higher marital quality after training
compared to the control group.
- SUPPORTS ROLLIE AND DUCK
- Extralmarital affair4s can be seen as being caused by a
lack of skills or stimulation. Boekhout et al, 1999, asked
undergraduate students to rate sexual and emotional
reasons for unfaithfulness. Participants judged sexual
reasons or infidelity, e.g. sexual excitement, boredom,
variety, would be more likely used by men. They thought
women would be more likely to blame emotional reasons,
e.g. lack of attention, commitment and emotional
satisfaction.
- IDA POINT: UNDERGRADS
WERE USED, SIMILAR AGE
GROUP >>> LACK OF
GENERALISABILITY >>>
LOW POP VALIDITY
- Tashiro and Frazier, 2003:Surveyed undergrad students
who recently broke up with their romantic partners. They
reported feeling distress in their relationship and personal
growth from the break-up, that gave them new insights for
the future. Through grave-dressing and resurrection
processes they were able to have closure from the
relationship and move on.
- IDA POINT: THIS APPLIES TO REAL LIFE.
- SUPPORTS ROLLIE AND DUCK
- Negative
- Reasons for breakdown offered do not separate
male and female differential viewpoints. Brehm
and Kassin, 1996, found that women are more
likely to stress unhappiness and incompatibility
as reasons for dissolution, whereas men are
particularly upset by sexual withholding.
- DISPROVES DUCK'S THEORY
- Long distance relationshiips LDRR and long distance
friendships, LDF, are actually quite common. Rohlfing 1995
found that 70% of students had experienced one LDRR and
90% LDF.
- DOESN'T SAY IF IT WORKED THO
- tHIS IS A SOCIALLY SENSITIVE AREA OF
RESEARCH, DELVING INTO PRIVATE
MATTERS. PARTICIPANTS MAY
EXPERIENCE DISTRESS IN RELIVING
RELATIONSHIP BREAKDOWN.
- IDA POINT: PROTECTION FROM HARM
- DISPROVES RD+D
- The theory is relevant to individualist
culture but not collectivist cultures, e.g.
in cases of arranged marriage.
- DISPROVES RD AND D.
