- 1774-Louis XVI, age nineteen,
ascends to the throne as the
state nears bankruptcy
- 1775- Flour War rebels demonstrate in
front of the Palace of Versailles.
- 1788-Orders for the arrest of two Parisian
parlementaires, d'Eprémesnil and Goislard,
who are most implacably opposed to the
government reforms, are issued; the
parlement declares its solidarity with the
two magistrates
- 1799-Constitution of the Year VIII - leadership of
Napoleon established under the Consulate. French
Revolution may be considered ended.
- The US Independence
- 1774-the First Continental
Congress meets in
Philadelphia with 56
delegates, representing every
colony, except Georgia.
Attendants include Patrick
Henry, George Washington,
Sam Adams and John
Hancock.
- 1775-General Gage orders 700 British soldiers to Concord to destroy the
colonists' weapons depot. That night, Paul Revere and William Dawes are
sent from Boston to warn colonists. Revere reaches Lexington about
midnight and warns Sam Adams and John Hancock who are hiding out there.
- 1776- San Francisco is established by Spanish missionaries on the California coast
- 1776- Washington takes his troops across the Delaware River into Pennsylvania. The next day, over
concerns of a possible British attack, the Continental Congress abandons Philadelphia for Baltimore.
- 1783-In Virginia, the House of Burgesses grants freedom to slaves who served in the Continental
Army
