6 Themes of Biology

Beschreibung

Our book (Modern Biology by Towle) organizes the study of biology into these 6 themes. Understanding the themes and their vocab terms (in the petagonal nodes) will help immensely with your studies this year.

6 Themes of Biology
  1. Cell Structure and Function
    1. unicellular organisms

      Anmerkungen:

      • living things that are a single cell
      1. multicellular organisms

        Anmerkungen:

        • living things that have more than one cell
      2. Stability and Homeostasis
        1. homeostasis

          Anmerkungen:

          • homeostasis is an organism's ability to maintain stable internal conditions (like temperature)
        2. Reproduction and Inheritance
          1. sexual reproduction

            Anmerkungen:

            • Reproduction that involves two organisms (parents) combining DNA to form a new organism (offspring or child)
            1. asexual reproduction

              Anmerkungen:

              • reproduction involving only one organism (usually a unicellular organism) that creates a copy of itself (a clone)
            2. Evolution
              1. natural selection

                Anmerkungen:

                • the theory that organisms with helpful traits will survive to have more offspring than organisms with less helpful traits
              2. Interdependence of Organisms
                1. ecology

                  Anmerkungen:

                  • the study of how organisms interact with one another and their environment.   From the greek "eko" meaning "home" and "logy" meaning "study."
                  1. ecosystem

                    Anmerkungen:

                    • All the living and non-living things in an area that interact with each other
                  2. Matter, Energy, and Organization
                    1. autotrophs

                      Anmerkungen:

                      • organisms that make their own food (plants)
                      1. heterotrophs

                        Anmerkungen:

                        • Organisms that eat other organisms to survive (all animals and fungi, some plants and unicellular organisms)
