“Without application in the world, the
value of knowledge is greatly
diminished.” Consider this claim with
respect to two areas of knowledge.
- To what extent does time affect the value of knowledge?
- To what extent does new technological advances diminish knowledge?
- Is there knowledge that throughout time can be forgotten?
- I consider this an interesting tittle because:
- It makes me question what happens
to the knowledge that I acquire yet I
don't frequently use.
- All the knowledge that I have found useless through out my
school life, will it ever become useful and will I apply it in the future?
- It makes me question whether there's knowledge thats
dosn't have an application
- Indigenous Knowledge Systems
- In my trip to Ciudad Perdida, the indigenous tribe we worked with and spent
time with was the Arahuacos. They were constantly licking a stick that went
inside a container. We later learned that the container was a "poporo" and
what they extracted from the inside was limestone with coke. This ancient
habit comes with medicinal porpuses; it maintains them warm in the high
altitudes they are exposed to,keeps them warm and puts them in contact
with their spiritual ancestors.
- FAITH: Indigenous
tribes believes it works,
and help them connect
with their spirit
ancestors. If they
believe in it they
continue doing it.
- MEMORY: It is a legacy that has
remained for thousands of years. It
is in their ancestors lives and shall
continue to prevail within their culture.
- Even though this has been used for centuries and has
proven to maintain body heat and hunger, people don't
have this in mind in their medical knowledge it still works,
just people have new medicines and ways of treating it.
- Maths
- I have worked with algebra and their concepts; letters and
other general symbols are used to represent numbers and
quantities in formulas and equations. Through the same
equations and formulas that has been used for years, we are
able to make our daily life easier and with more sense.
- LANGUAGE: Through language most of
the knowledge that has been acquired for
millions of years, it has been able to pass
it on to generations.
- MEMORY: (Counterargument) Even though
irreplaceable knowledge was lost, people still
had memory of what was inside the library
and could help recover some of the
knowledge lost.
- The same methods and equations has prevailed for centuries and
even though new knowledge can be introduced the same basis are
used world wide. Eventhough new advances may make the process
easier, the process prevails.
- New knowledge is introduced and acquired every day, still some
knowledge seems it has lost value since it is not used anymore or rarely
used. This doesn't mean that that the knowledge has lost its real value.
Knowledge, no matter from which area it come from, has advanced and
come up with new perspectives and theories, nevertheless, the prior
knowledge people seem to perceive as "unvaluable" are the bases of
every advance that is seen as the real valuable knowledge.
- The indigenous medicine was one of the first, if not the first to encounter
with human wellbeing. Plants and natural resources they used to heal are
now being modified with new chemical knowledge, still it has the same
result.
- Some knowledge hasn't been modified greatly, maths
procedures still are the same as centuries ago. Now a days we
find it easier and easier to perfom every day tasks thnks to this
knowledge.
- Some knowledge has not changed
and we still use methods our
ancestors used.
