Movie Rating System

In 1968, the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA)
1. Devised a voluntary rating system for movies
2. They replaced the earlier censorship called the Hays Code
3. Objective
  1. Was to encourage parents to participate in deciding what their children should and should not watch
Today's Classification and Ratings Administration (CARA)
1. Provides warnings to families about the material in the films
2. Factors
  1. what
    1. The violence
    2. sexual content
    3. Substance abuse
    4. Profane language
The ratings have received much criticism over the years
1. saying there is too much emphasis on content
  1. and sexual language and not enough in violence.
  2. That is, there are extremely violent movies that children have been allowed to see according to the rating
These are the categories that are currently being used:
1. G - General Audiences
  1. All ages admitted. Nothing would be offensive to children.
2. PG -13 - Parents Strongly Cautioned
  1. Some material may be inappropriate for children under 13.
3. R - Restricted
  1. Under 17 requires an accompanying parent or adult guardian. This movie contains some adult material.
4. NC-17 - Adults Only
  1. No one under 1u admitted. This movie is only appropriate for adults.
5. PG - Parental Guidance Suggested
  1. This movie may contain some elements that parents may not like their children to see.
