- To have a proper control of the conquered lands, the first thing
the conquistadors did when they arrived to a new land was the
foundation of a city. Conquistador Sebastian de Benalcazar took
possession of the North of Tahuantinsuyo and founded the
cities of Quito (1534), and Guayaquil (1538). Land was also given
to Spaniards as a mechanism of appropriation of territory. The
land was distributed according to the importance of each
person.
- Evangelization
- One of the methods Spaniards used to control the
indigenous population was to convert them to
Catholicism. This was an effort to destroy the
ancestral beliefs of the natives. However,
although indigenous people were baptized, they
maintained their native beliefs. Many of their
beliefs have survived to present days
