Cult of Domesticity
1. Is a view about women in the 1800s. It describes that women should stay at home and should not do any work outside of the home. There were four things they believed that women should be:
  1. Piety
    1. Is the quality of being religious. Women were more religious than man during this time.
  2. Purity
    1. Women were pure in heart, mind, and body.
  3. Submissiveness
    1. All married women were submit to their husbands.
  4. Domesticity
    1. Women were not allowed to work outside their homes.
Susan B. Anthony/Elizabeth Stanton
1. Anthony led the fight to gain equal rights for women, Including the right to vote.
2. Stanton and Anthony became lifetime alliance as women's rights activists.
  1. In 1850, they managed to include women in the provisions of the 14th and 15th Amendments.
    1. They both founded the National Woman Suffrage Association.
3. Stanton wrote “The Declaration of Sentiments,” calling for changes in law and society to elevate women's status, and demanding the right to vote between July, 19 & 20 1848.
Alice Paul
1. She was arrested seven times in England for her suffrage activism, but only once in America. The longest sentence she served in Britain was one month. In the United States, she was sentenced to seven months, but only served one.
  1. She was also forced fed
2. In 1938 she founded the World Women's Party. She represented the party at the League of Nations headquarters in Geneva.
3. She was award a Congressional gold medal in recognition of her role in the women's suffrage movement and in advancing equal rights for women.
