SINGAPORE - THE RICKSHAW
- For the constitution there are
four commonly used
languages: English, Chinese,
Malay and Tamil
- Rickshaw originates from
the Japanese word
jinrikisha (人力車, 人 jin =
human, 力 riki = power or
force, 車 sha = vehicle),
which literally means
"human-powered vehicle"
- Hand-pulled rickshaws were
a major means of transport
in Singapore from the 1880s
to 1930s.
- The rickshaw was invented in
Japan in the 1860s.They were
considered like taxis nowadays
- The first rickshaws appeared
in Singapore in the 1880s.
Rickshaws initially came in
single seater and double
seater models.
- The Singapore streets were crowded with
Rickshaw pullers. They wore shorts or baggy
pants. But they often worked shirtless and
bare feet under Singapore's blistering sun.

hardworking men found that pulling a
rickshaw was a new opportunity for
employment
