Fractions and Decimals
  1. When something is divided into equal parts, each part is called a fraction.
    1. A number written using the decimal number system is called a decimal.
      1. Most commonly, the term refers to a number in which any parts less than a whole number are written after the decimal point.
      2. A fraction can be expressed as one number written above another.
        1. The number on the bottom is called the denominator
          1. The number on the top is called the numerator
          2. Numerator: Represents the number of parts being considered.
            1. Denominator: Represents the total number of equal parts.
              1. Simple fractions
                1. A fraction that has whole numbers for its numerator and denominator.
                  1. This is the most frequently seen type of fraction
                  2. Complex fraction
                    1. A fraction that has a numerator or denominator or both which is itself a fraction
                    2. Proper fraction
                      1. A fraction that is less than a whole unit. Any fraction with a numerator that is lower than the denominator.
                      2. Improper fraction
                        1. A fraction that is more than a whole unit. Any fraction with a numerator that is higher than the denominator.
                        2. Mixed number
                          1. A number consisting of a whole number and a fraction.
                            1. They can be considered as an improper fraction.
                            2. Decimal place
                              1. The position of a number to the right of the decimal place.
                              2. Decimal fraction
                                1. Any number less han 1 that is expressed as a deciaml.
                                2. Add or subtract decimals.
                                  1. Write the numbers in a column, with the decimal points lined up.
                                  2. Dividing fractions.
                                    1. Ignore the decimal points to give whole numbers. Then divide the numbers: the result will be the same as if dividing deciamls.
                                    2. Multiply decimals
                                      1. Ignore the decimal points and multiply the whole numbers. Then insert the decimal places in the same as the total number of decimal places in the number being multiplied
                                      2. Rounding decimals
                                        1. When working with decimals it is often necessary to approximate the figure by rounding up or down. Do this exactly the same way as you round integers, but round the number to the nearest tenth, hundredth, thousandth and so on, depending on how many decimal places or significant figures you want the use.
