Injection Moulding
- Injection Moulding is a commercial manufacturing
process. The process requires pressure to force
the thermoplastic into a mould. Complex shapes
can be produced by injection moulding.
- Injection moulding typically produces products
such as buckets, chairs, telephone cases and bottle
caps. The typical plastic used is PS(polystyrene),
Nylon, PP(polypropylene) and PP(polythene).
- Advantages
- A variety of coloured plastics can be used
- High production rate with good quality finish
- Intricate moulds can make complex shapes
- Disadvantages
- The moulds are expensive
- Setup costs are very high
- Can only run high volume productions
- Process
- 1. The hopper holds the plastic coloured granules,
which then fall onto the Archimedean screw.
- 2. This screw rotates and the plastic
is passed through the heater.
