Why did the
Schliefflen Plan fail
- The Belgians were able to hold up the
German advance at forts at Antwerp,
Liege and Namur
- Because of this delay, the BEF
were then able to mobilise and
started arriving in France on 15th
August
- The French then had
time to move North to
confront the German
army
- The Russians were able to mobilise
their troops in 10 days instead of the
expected 6 weeks
- The German advance was stopped by
the French forces and the BEF at the
Battle of the Marne in early Sep, and
the German army was forced to retreat
northwards
- The German army started to
retreat to easily-defended areas
and set up trenches, and the British
and French did the same
