    1. March 1925: Sun Yatsen dies
      1. Chiang Kasher becomes commander-in-chief of Guomindang army
      2. July 1926: March to the North to unify China
        1. Millions of chinese under warlord rule supported Guomindang
          1. Nanjing captured in early 1917--> set up Nationalist government
            1. Warlords forced to surrender
      3. Communist-Guomindang split (1927)
        1. After they conquered all the south and some of the north, relationship broke down: different aims
        2. Shanghai Massacre (1927)
          1. As Chiang went to attack Shanghai, communists inside led a rebellion against the warlord and gained power
            1. Chiang arrived a few days later and killed all the communists
              1. 1000 arrested, 300 executed, 5,000 missing
              2. All communists in Guangzhou also killed
                1. Communists retreated to Jiangxi and Hunan provinces in countryside
