GCSE Chemistry unit 1
  1. Atom
    1. Smallest part of an element that can be recognised as that element.
    2. Element
      1. Contains only one type of atom
        1. Over 100 elements on the periodic table
          1. Mostly Metals
            1. They are split into groups
              1. Group 0 is the noble gasses
                1. Group 1 is the alkaline metals
                  1. Group 2 is the Earth Metals
              2. Compound
                1. 2 or more elements that have been chemically combined or joined
                2. Bonding
                  1. Ionic
                    1. Only occurs when a metal is chemically combined with a non metal
                      1. one of the elements takes an electron from another
                    2. Covalent
                      1. Only occurs when a non metal chemically combines non metal
                        1. Sharing of an electron
                      2. Metallic
                        1. Is when the inside of a metal combines with another particle inside of the metal
                      3. NaCl
                        1. Ionicly Bonded
                        2. CH4
                          1. Covalenty Bonded
                          2. Cu
                            1. Metalic Bonding
                            2. H2O
                              1. Covalently Bonded
                              2. O2
                                1. Covalently Bonded
                                2. When atoms bond covalently they share an electron
                                  1. This is because they need to complete their outer shells
                                  2. When atoms bond ionicly one atom takes an electron from another atom
                                    1. Again because both the atoms want to complete their outer shells
                                    2. Atoms
                                      1. Proton
                                        1. Positively charged
                                        2. Neutron
                                          1. Neutrally charged
                                          2. Electron
                                            1. Negatively charged
                                            2. An atom that has the same number of electrons and protons does not have a charge
                                              1. Atoms that have different numbers of electrons and protons are ions
