- + Shea (1981) - Shea video taped 3 & 4 year
old children at playtime during their first 10
weeks of nursery. He found that children
became more sociable the longer they were
in day care. They stood closer together and
engaged in more rough and tumble play, and
move further way from teachers. This
concludes that day care helps improve
social development and peer relationships.
- + Clarke - Stewart (1994) - Studied 150
children attending school for the first
time. They had experienced different
forms of daycare. He found that
children who had attended nurseries
could cope better in social situations,
and were able to interact better with
peers, compared with children who had
been previously looked after in family
settings. He concluded that being in
day care helps social development and
peer relations.
- + Andersson (1989-1992) - He studied the
social and cognitive progress of children
attending swedish day care. He found that
children who attended day care were able to
get along with other children better, were
more sociable and outgoing, and had better
abilities to play with their peers than children
who did not attend day care. Being in day

- + EPPE Project - Studied of 3000
children between 3 and 7 years old. They
found that children who attended daycare
showed increased independence and
peer sociability at 5 years. This study also
found that an early start in day care
between 2 & 3 years old was also linked
to being more socialble with children.

- - DiLalla (1988) - carried out a correlation study
into time spent in daycare and pro social
behaviour. He found a negative correlation
between the amount of time spent in daycare
and pro social behaviour : children who spent
more time in day care were less cooperative and
helpful in their dealings with other children. Day
care harms peer relations.
- Aggression
- - NICHD (1991) - Over 1000 american children from families
with very different backgrounds were screened in a
longitudinal study. At aged 5 the study found that the more
time a child spent in day care the more aggressive they
became. Children in full time day care were almost 3 times
more likely to show behavioural problems than those cared
for at home - behaviour problems included arguing, temper,
tantrums, lying and hitting. There is a positive correlation
between time spent in daycare and amount of aggressive
behaviour, therefore this suggests that day acre and
aggressiveness are linked.

of aggressive behaviour decreased
towards one another. These
changed were greater in children
attending for 5 days a weeks
compared to those attending 2
days a week. Daycare can
increase sociability and decrease
aggression.
