The Rationalisation of Swimming

rivers anymore.
- There was then a lack of hygiene, as
people had no access to clean water.

- In response to the Cholera
Epidemic Public Baths were created.
- 1846- Baths and Wash Houses Act.
- Local authorities (councils)
apply for funding to build the
public baths.
- They believed this would
improve the force of their
army and workers.
- It did reduce abstenteeism
- By this time most public baths
had hot and cold water.
- These public baths had
clothes washing areas
and plunge pools.
- These were safe and
monitored unlike river towns.
- Split down into first
and second class
facilities.

Made it accessible to
the lower classes.
- The first class was
the higher working
class.
- But in 1849 there was
another cholera epidemic.
- As people were still using dirty
water in slum conditions.
- As a result this increased the building of
baths and wash houses.
- After 1850 there was an increase in transport.

more accessible
- After 1850 there was a growth of
Regency Spa Towns.

- This was because of the
growth of middle class
towns.
- With this new traditions
were developed.
