- What does Conservatism mean
- Conservatism is an ideology that is defined by a "desire to
conserve". Its has tradtionally been suspicious of abstract principles
or developed theories, prederring instead to place its faith in tradition,
experience and history. The defining values of Conservativism are:
- Tradition - respect for ideas, practices and institutions that
have been passed down from one generation to the next
- Human imperfection - the belief that people are
security-seeking creatures and also morally flawed
- Hierarchy and authority - "top-down" social
organization is natural and benefical
- There are two kinds of conservatism in the UK:
- One Nation conservatism
- Thatcherite conservatism
- What does Socialism mean
- Socialism is anideology that covers beliefs ranging from revolutionary
communism to reformist social democeracy. The central idea of
socialism is that people are social creaures who are bound together by
a common humanity. The defining values of tradtional socialism are:
- Fraternity - literally, brotherhood; bonds of
sympathy and comradeship between people
- Cooperation - a preference for people working
together rather than competing with one another
- Equality - the desire to abolish
or at least reduce class divions
- There are two main kinds of Socialism:
- Fundamentalist socialists (Marxists and Communists)
believe that capitalism should be abolished and replaced
by a based on the collective ownership of wealth
- Revisionist socialists (social democrats)
believe that capitalism should be reformed
throught social and economic intervention

equality and state intervation
