Chemistry- Crude oil and
Alkanes/Alkenes
- What is Crude Oil?
- Hydrocarbon=contains carbon and hydrogen atoms
- Alkanes and alkenes
- Alkanes= useful as fuels, have single bonds
- Alkenes= used to make chemicals such as plastic, have double bonds
- Fractional Distillation
- 1) heat up the crude oil mixture
- 2) mixture boils and each fraction will boil at a certain temperature depending on its hydrocarbon length
- 3) gas passes through the condenser and cools down (gas turns to liquid)
- How do we meet demand?
- Cracking
- Cracking is breaking down long, less in demand fractions such as decane using thermal
decompostion into shorter, more useful chains and ethane gas like octane
- Thermal Decompostion
- This means 'to break down using heat'
- Monomer=a molecule that can be bonded together
with other identical molecules to form a polymer
- Polymerisation= a process that combines
monomers to form a polymer
