Authentically Assessing CLD
Learners
- What is Authentic
Assessment?
- The use of real world
problems to assess
student aquisition of
knowledge
- Example:: Ms Pass needs to
store our juice boxes. Use
the juices boxes available to
decide how many will fit in
the box.
- Why Authentic
Assessment?
- Authentic Assessment
goes beyond simply
regurgitating
information.
- Allows teachers to assess how
students construct meaning
as well as verify acquistion of
knowledge.
- Students are able to
show their knowledge in
a variety of ways.
- When I give my students
tasks that use multiple skills I
have taught, I can see where
gaps in learning are.
- What are the steps to
designing an Authentic
Assessment?
- Step 1: Decide what you want
your students to know or be
able to do. This is your standard.
- Students will use the
Scientific process to
design and carry out
an experiment.
- Step 2: Design an authentic
assessment to determine if
students have mastered
standard.
- Task: Choose one of
the four questions
below. Use the
Scientific process to
answer the question.
- How does a
banana slice
change over
time?
- Which towel
absorbs the
most water?
- Which method
keeps bread
freshest?
- What will
keep apple
slices from
turning
brown?
- Step 3: Decide on the criteria
that exemplifies a good
performance.
- Your
experiment
must have....
- A clearly
stated
hypothesis
- Only on
Variable.
- Be a fair
test.
- Easy to
follow
procedures.
- Information or
research from
more than one
source.
- A table or
graph
showing your
collected data.
- A
statement
of your
results.
- Step 4: Design a Rubric or a
grading scale for students to
grade their own work.
- 3: Experiment as all
required elements.
- 2: Experiment has
4 of 6 required
elements.
- 1: Experiment
has 2 of 6
required
elements
- How can Authentic Assessment be used with
CLD learners?
- Authentic assessment
can be used to build a
portfolio of learning.
- The student portfolio can
be a mixture of work
chosen by the student
and teacher to show the
students strengths.
- Assessments can be
differentiated to meet the
students needs.
- Concerns about High Stakes
Testing and CLD Learners.
- When are
accommodations
allowed
for
CLD
learners?
- Insufficient
Language
proficiency as
determined by
educational
professionsals
- Separate
Educational needs
including but not
limited to learner
disabilities.
- How can a test be
culturally responsive?
- Material must be
comprehensible for the
learner.
- Material must
not contain
cultural bias.
- .Students can understand
cultural content through
context
