Assessments for ELLs
- Performance - based assessments
- Based on classroom instruction and everyday task. These assessments
can be used to assess ELLs' language proficiency and academic
achievement
- Reading with partners, retelling stories, role playing, giving descriptions
- Portfolio assessments
- Practical ways of assessing student work throughout
the entire year. It is a collection of descriptive records
of a variety of student work. You can meet with ELLs
to develop their goals and standards.
- Tapes of oral work, formal test data, teacher descriptions of student
accomplishment, samples of written work
- Teaching to the test
- Teachers are encouraged to teach to the
test. Students need to learn how to
perform well on meaningful tasks. To aid
students in that process, it is helpful to
show them models of good (and not so
good) performance.
- So, by knowing what good performance looks like, and by
knowing what specific characteristics make up good
performance, students can better develop the skills and
understanding necessary to perform well on these tasks.
- High-Stakes Testing
- These tests are used to make important decisions about students. These
include whether students should be promoted, allowed to graduate, or
admitted to programs.
- Accommodations are available for ELLs • provide extra time for testing • read test instructions aloud
• make sure students comprehend the instructions • read the writing and math test items aloud
• provide extra breaks during testing • provide a testing environment with fewer students and
potential distractions
- Ongoing Assessment
- Provides continuous feedback on the effectiveness of instruction
and indicates areas where a change in instructional strategy may
be advised.
- Portfolio assessment, Receptive Oral Language Skills, Expressive Language Skills, graphic

- Initial Assessment
- ELLs must be identified and students
who have been identified as ELLs must
be offered a program designed to help
them succeed in school.
- Language survey (tells educators whether or not the child is
exposed to languages other than English), language
proficiency tests, story retellings and reading running
records, which allows the observer to document and
analyze a child’s reading behavior
