Ammonia
- Ammonia = NH3
- Used in fertiliser because of nitrogen.
- Made by forcing Nitrogen and Hydrogen to combine together.
- Needs special conditions because Nitrogen is extremely unreactive.
- Really important for food growth.
- Reversible Reaction
- As soon as ammonia is made it starts to
decompose back to nitrogen + hydrogen.
- Equilibrium - Reaction
one way is the same
rate as the other way.
- Rate of the reaction in both
directions is the same.
- The point of
equilibrium
can be
changed.
- The reaction is
done on an
industrial scale
under controlled
conditions.
- Rate
- Heat up = more energy = faster
reaction = more collisions and
harder collisions
- Catalyst (Increases
number of successful
collisions)
- Increase pressure (brings
particles closer together)
- Yield
- The yield depends on the point of
equilibrium. Anything that
encourages the forward reaction
will increase the yield of ammonia.
